Imagine starting basketball at just 3 years old, inspired by your father who played in the Olympics. That’s how Santi Aldama’s story began in the small city of Las Palmas, Spain.
While most young talents joined big clubs like Real Madrid or Barcelona, Santi made a bold decision. He stayed at a small local academy and focused on developing his game his own way.
His talent exploded on the international stage. He captained Spain’s U18 team to gold at the European Championship and was named MVP. The future looked extremely bright.
But then came the first major test.
During his college years at Loyola Maryland, a serious knee injury forced him to miss his entire freshman year after surgery. Many players would have lost hope. Santi used that time to come back even stronger. He broke records, earned All-League honors, and declared for the 2021 NBA Draft.
Selected 30th overall and traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, he started from almost nothing — averaging just 4 points in his rookie season. Through hard work and consistency, he gradually became a key player.
In 2025, he signed a massive 3-year, $52.5 million contract. This season he was averaging 14 points and 6.7 rebounds before another knee issue appeared.
